– Explanation of the College Football Season Rankings and the components

110. Purdue Boilermakers, Big Ten

There was the thrilling win over Nebraska, but that was it for any sort of positives starting out with a pick-six fest in the loss to Marshall and only beating Indiana State for the one other win. There were some ugly moments, but the Boilermakers pushed Michigan State on the road in a 24-21 loss, lost to Bowling Green by seven, and couldn’t get it done against Northwestern losing 21-14. Just when it seemed like things were about to change, everything crashed losing to Illinois at home 48-14 a week after beating the Huskers.

109. UNLV Rebels, UNLV

All things considered, it wasn’t an awful first season under Tony Sanchez – he had a ton of work to do. The Bad Losses to Wyoming to close out the season and on the road to Fresno State were a problem for the overall Season Score, but the Rebels beat their rival – Nevada – and didn’t whiff on the layups against Idaho State and Hawaii. They battled with Northern Illinois and San Jose State, but there weren’t too many close losses. It was a stepping-stone season.

108. Kent State Golden Flashes, MAC

The team was okay defensively, but the offense didn’t show up to the party. The Golden Flashes scored 45 on Delaware State, and that was it for the explosion scoring fewer than 20 points nine times and scoring seven points or fewer six times. How bad did things get? The O scored 31 points over the final five games with three shutouts. All three victories were Bad Wins beating Miami University and UMass along with the blowout of Delaware State, but there weren’t any Bad Losses.

107. Ball State Cardinals, MAC

The Cardinals beat the three teams they were supposed to – VMI, Eastern Michigan and UMass – but they failed to beat anyone better. Losing at home to Georgia State was unforgivable, but the other eight losses were to much stronger teams. They pushed Northwestern in Evanston, and lost to Central Michigan 23-21, but but they couldn’t hang with the anyone else getting blown away in the other losses. All nine losses came to bowl teams.

106. Idaho Vandals, Sun Belt

Baby step. Idaho took a nice move forward coming up with four wins and being far more competitive than it’s been in recent years showing up with a good offense and pushing Auburn a wee bit and scoring 20 points or more ten times. There was a Bad Loss to New Mexico State in a wild shootout, but the Vandals beat Wofford, ULM and Texas State in games they needed to win. Close wins are part of the deal, but three of the four victories came by a total of 13 points.

105. UTEP Miners, Conference USA

The lowest Season Ranking by anyone with five wins, the Miners beat a ton of awful teams with three of them coming by a total of nine points. The Bad Loss at home to UTSA in a 25-6 blowout screwed up the season – win that, and UTEP would’ve been in a bowl. It was a flaky year with a 17-15 loss to a great Louisiana Tech team, and there was a 52-12 loss to FIU, but it was close to being a winning campaign.

104. Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Big Ten

It was a strange and crazy year with massive injuries, big suspensions, and a coaching change, but there were a few good moments early on with a 37-34 loss to Washington State and a 31-24 loss to Michigan State. The wild 55-52 shootout win over Indiana was the high point with the other three wins all Bad Wins against Norfolk State, Kansas and Army. The Bad Loss to Maryland at home to close the season killed the Season Score,

103. Louisiana-Lafayette, Ragin’ Cajuns, Sun Belt

The Ragin’ Cajuns didn’t get into the Sun Belt title hunt with a disastrous final month keeping them out of the bowl picture. Three of the four wins were Bad Wins, with the lone decent one not all that great beating Georgia State on the road. The Bad Loss to New Mexico State at home was horrendous, and the 41-17 loss to Troy to close out the season was unforgivable.

102. Boston College Eagles, ACC

The defense was incredible, but it didn’t lead the way to wins because the offense was so miserable. 76 of the team’s 206 points on the season came in the win over Howard, and 24 more of them came in the opening win over Maine. After those first two games, BC failed to score more than 17 points the rest of the way, bottoming out with a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest at home. On the plus side, five of the losses – including a fight with Notre Dame – came by a grand total of 14 points.

101. Wake Forest Demon Deacons, ACC

All three of the wins were Bad Wins beating Elon, Army and Boston College, but the Demon Deacons were far more competitive and showed excellent upside and promise. They lost to Indiana, Florida State, Louisville and Duke, but they were all good battles. The offense didn’t do enough scoring 17 points or fewer eight times, but it was still an improvement from 2014.
