50. Ohio Bobcats, MAC

Four of the eight wins were Bad Wins, but there were more than enough highlights to make this a great year – but a streaky year – starting out 5-1, losing three straight, and then winning three in a row. Beating Marshall early on, and with wins over Akron and Northern Illinois, the Bobcats turned in a decent campaign even though it didn’t get to the MAC title game and lost to Appalachian State in the Camellia Bowl.

49. Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Conference USA

The Golden Eagle offense blew up against a whole slew of bad teams. Five of the eight wins were Bad Wins, but considering what the team looked like to start the season, winning six straight over the end of the regular season – and getting to the Conference USA title game – was terrific. At the very least, USM was fun scoring 30 points or more ten times.

48. Texas A&M Aggies, SEC

It wasn’t the year Aggie fans were hoping for, but against a nasty schedule the eight wins weren’t all that bad. There weren’t a slew of great wins, but beating Mississippi State and Arkansas was a nice boost early on on the way to a 5-0 start – and then Alabama happened. A&M never recovered losing three games in four before winning two layups and losing to LSU and Louisville to close out the year. The three Quality Wins turned out to be the difference.

47. Marshall Thundering Herd, Conference USA

The Marshall schedule stunk but the team did what it was supposed to do against the mediocre teams. A whopping six of the ten victories were Bad Wins, but the victory over Southern Miss and the St. Petersburg Bowl win over Connecticut ended the year on a high note. This is the lowest-ranked ten-win team, and it could’ve been a far better season losing winnable games to Ohio and Middle Tennessee.

46. California Golden Bears, Pac-12

Everything started out well with a 5-0 run, but a loss to Utah started a bad stretch of four straight losses and five losses in the last six games. Just when it seemed like the Bears were a fluky flash, they came up with a wild 48-46 shootout win over Arizona State and rolled over a good Air Force team in the Armed Forced Bowl. When Cal scored more than 28 points, it was 8-0 and 0-5 when going under.

45. Washington State Cougars, Pac-12

The opening game loss to Portland State hurt the Season Score in a big way, but everything turned around in a surprising campaign coming really, really close to beating Cal on the road and with a missed kick giving Stanford a 30-28 win. The injury to QB Luke Falk led to a 45-10 Apple Cup blasting from Washington, but the Cougars bounced back to beat Miami in the Sun Bowl.

44. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, Conference USA

That’s the season the program was waiting to crank up. The Bulldogs overcame a 1-2 start and cranked up the offense from there winning seven of the next eight games before a stunning loss to Southern Miss. Tech rolled out 42 points or more in six games, but the defense failed in the losses going 0-4 when allowing 39 points or more and 9-0 when allowing fewer. Blasting away on Arkansas State in the New Orleans Bowl was a great way to end a resurgent campaign.

43. BYU Cougars, Independent

It was a wildly fun year, even if it ended with a big, crashing thud. The Cougars came up with fun, wild wins over Nebraska and Boise State to start, and got rolling again after losses to UCLA and Michigan with five straight victories before the loss to Missouri. However, for all the positives, there were only two Quality Wins coming against Boise State and Cincinnati. The Royal Purple Bowl loss to Utah was sour, even with the wild comeback attempt.

42. Georgia Southern Eagles, Sun Belt

It wasn’t a Sun Belt title winning season like the fans had hoped for, but it rolled to a nine-win season, pushed Georgia hard in a 23-17 loss, and beat Bowling Green in a 58-27 shootout in the GoDaddy Bowl. For all the positives, and even with the terrific 42-17 win over Western Michigan, the Panther season was defined by the 31-13 loss to Appalachian State and the regular season finish against growing rival Georgia State, losing 34-7.

41. Arkansas State Red Wolves, Sun Belt

The Sun Belt champion made its season with a key road win over Appalachian State, effectively taking the conference title. It wasn’t bad after starting out 1-3 with the lone win coming against Missouri State, ripping off eight straight wins before losing to Louisiana Tech in the New Orleans Bowl. For all the positives, though, that victory over ASU turned out to be the lone Quality Win.
