Royals left fielder Alex Gordon set an MLB record for home runs in a season after hitting the 5,694th of the year against the Blue Jays.

It was only a matter of time before someone hit a home run Tuesday that would break the MLB record for home runs in a season.

Alex Gordon was lucky number 5,694, which broke the previous record of 6,493 set in 2000. Brad Miller, Max Kepler and Alex Presley also hit homers Tuesday to help propel Gordon to the record-setting number.

Gordon hit the home run off of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Ryan Tepera to cut the Kansas City Royals’ deficit to 5-2. The homer was Gordon’s eighth of the season and 159th in his 11-year MLB career. Entering Tuesday, he had a .307 slugging percentage, which is the lowest in MLB among players qualified for the batting title.

Alex Gordon has the lowest wRC+ (57) for a qualified hitter this year, so of course he's the one to break the all-time HR record.

There were 5,610 home runs in MLB last season, which is an average of 2.31 per game. According to the Associated Press, this year’s current pace (entering Tuesday) of 2.52 projects the year to end with a total of 6,139.
