Baylor continues to test the fact that college football has no exhibition season. For the second straight week, the nation’s fourth-ranked team is preparing for an opponent that has no chance of challenging it. After a slow start, the Bears ran away from SMU, 56-21, and an even easier time is expected Saturday with Lamar. The Cardinals won their opener over NAIA Bacone College, 66-3.
The Cardinals are nothing if not confident after opening the campaign by scoring nine offensive touchdowns. QB Joe Minden was sharp in his starting debut, completing 80% of his throws for 170 yards and three touchdowns. And Reggie Begelton is an all-conference wide receiver who continues to get more comfortable with his new battery mate.
Very few FBS programs can slow down Art Briles’ offense. A team calling the Southland Conference home doesn’t have a prayer. The under/over on Drew Galitz’s number of punts is two—take the under. The Bears will do as they please on offense, as usual, with QB Seth Russell spreading the ball around to a boundless array of weapons. Russell’s backup, Jarrett Stidham, might outscore Lamar Saturday evening.
DE Shawn Oakman and S Orion Stewart are back atop the depth chart, great news for the Baylor defense. No, the Bears won’t need the players, both of whom were suspended for unspecified team rules, to get to 2-0. However, it’s important for Oakman and Stewart to get back into game shape in advance of the Big 12 opener on Oct. 3.
Stay healthy, and get quality reps for the second-teamers. There’s not much else on the Baylor to-do list for a game that’ll be over before the first quarter comes to a close. Demolitions of this magnitude do provide valuable live action for Stidham, the blue-chip rookie and heir to Russell.
Without further ado, the Baylor vs. Lamar prediction is …
Final Score: Baylor 70, Lamar 7
