Why You Need To Care

The No. 16-ranked Bears have gone on a tear since losing their second game of the season against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene, Ore.

Baylor has rattled off five straight wins to improve to 6-1, and the latest victory was a 69-67 nail-biter against Vanderbilt on Sunday.

Northwestern State has been, quite literally, the opposite of the Bears so far this season. The Demons are 1-6 with their only win coming against Louisiana College right before Thanksgiving.

Head coach Mike McConathy watched his team get destroyed on the road against Arkansas last time out. The Razorbacks topped the Demons, 117-78, and now Northwestern State is simply looking to stop the bleeding.

But it doesn’t feel like that’s going to happen on the road in Waco, Texas.

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears have beaten their opponents by an average of 27.2 points this season, and a decently-sized portion of that scoring has come from senior forward Taurean Prince, who’s averaging 16.6 points per game on 40.4 percent shooting. Baylor will need to let Prince do his thing, as he’s also hitting on 40.5 percent of his three-point attempts. They’ll also need to pressure the ball handler because Northwestern State averages 15.7 turnovers per game. Baylor will just have to box out and play solid defense like it has so far.

Why Northwestern State Will Win

The Demons absolutely need their top scorer, Zeek Woodley, to have an outstanding game in this one. Woodley is averaging 24.1 points per game on 53.7 percent shooting. Northwestern State got an extremely tough break when it lost Jalan West for the season with a torn ACL. The Demons will need to find scoring somewhere else in the rotations. They’ll have to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim with hopes of getting to the free throw line. That combined with ol’ fashioned communication on defense can help keep Northwestern State in it.

What’s Going To Happen?

Baylor is just too good, and Northwestern State can’t find anyone to fill in for West. That was a big loss, and Woodley can’t carry the team on his back for too long against a team like the Bears. Baylor will dominate the boards, win the turnover battle and attack the basket. The Bears should start to pull away in the first half, and it will be out of reach by the middle of the second half.
