Baylor vs. Northwestern State Storylines

It’s near impossible to discuss Baylor football without mentioning the tumultuous offseason. In an effort to keep things focused on the field, let’s just point out the obvious that Art Briles is gone, as is talented backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham and a bevy of talented recruits.

If Seth Russell can stay healthy, then the offense shouldn’t miss too much of a beat. Wide receiver depth isn’t there like it was last year when Corey Coleman was setting records, and Baylor is hoping KD Cannon can return to full-strength after offseason arthroscopic knee surgery. Under Briles, Baylor was more equipped for shootouts, and the same holds true this year – the defensive line is suspect, though pass coverage should hold steady.

As for Northwestern State, senior quarterback Brooks Haack will take command of the offense after transferring from Louisiana-Lafayette. Last year, in 10 games with ULL, Haack threw for 1,407 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions. On defense, the Demons are now running a 3-4 base defense, and will be reliant on a patchwork group of linebackers – including three JUCO transfers – to slow down Baylor’s explosive offense.

Matchup to Watch

Baylor running backs vs. Northwestern State linebackers

Johnny Jefferson is all banged up, but Shock Linwood and Terence Williams still make a formidable tandem for Baylor. If Northwestern State’s linebacking crew can’t contain the run, then it’ll be a long day for the Demons as Baylors backs set up Seth Russell to pick apart the reworked defense.
