Clemson hasn’t been very impressive in either of its first two games, and now it will be missing one of its best defensive players for at least Saturday.

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed Sunday that star linebacker Ben Boulware will be forced to miss this week’s game against South Carolina State. He suffered a right ankle injury in the second half of Clemson’s 30-24 win over Troy. Boulware limped to the sideline and spent the remainder of the game on crutches.

Swinney downplayed the issue after the game and said Boulware simply had a rolled ankle. But the injury apparently worsened by Sunday, when Swinney confirmed Boulware will have to sit out. The Clemson coach expects his star linebacker to return against Georgia Tech on Sept. 22.

Losing Boulware is another blow for a Tigers team that dropped from No. 2 to No. 5 in this week’s AP Top 25 because of two underwhelming performances. Swinney said Sunday he was proud of his defense up until the last five minutes against Troy, which made things tight at the end despite entering as a heavy underdog.

Clemson will be favored big again with South Carolina State visiting, and an easy victory would be welcomed, especially considering Boulware won’t be in uniform.
