Bethune-Cookman vs. North Texas Game Preview

Bethune-Cookman’s season opener was called off due to thunderstorms, and it will not be rescheduled. B-CU trailed Alcorn State 13-7 in the second quarter of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge when lightning appeared in the area near Daytona Beach’s Municipal Stadium. After a long delay, both teams agreed it would be best for player and fan safety to cancel the game. Meanwhile, North Texas fell in its home opener to SMU 34-21. The Mean Green’s Alec Morris threw two touchdown passes, but he also tossed three first-half interceptions.

    What To Know About Bethune-Cookman

The Wildcats from the MEAC won their fifth league title in six years last season despite having a new head coach in Terry Sims. Quarterback Larry Brihm leads the league’s top offense (445.0 yards per game last fall), and he has extensive playing experience despite not being the clear starter until this season. In 19 total games (two starts), Brihm has thrown for 1,105 yards and eight touchdowns and completed 58 percent of his passes. He has thrown five interceptions, but he only threw one pick last year in 94 attempts.

What to Know About North Texas

Former North Carolina offensive coordinator Seth Littrell does not have an easy rebuilding job as the new leader of the Mean Green. But Littrell is a young, innovative coach who should at least make watching the team more bearable. The squad averaged just 15.2 points per game last fall, so offensive coordinator Graham Harrell has his work cut out for him. Against SMU in the opener, the offense did not look in sync, which is understandable. It’s going to take time for everything to come together on that side of the ball.

    Matchup To Watch

    Jawill Davis vs. UNT secondary

The junior wideout is a top weapon for this Bethune-Cookman offense, and he will be facing a defense that was near the bottom in FBS in total yards allowed and points allowed last fall. He could be a big play waiting to happen in this matchup.

    Bethune-Cookman vs. North Texas Prediction

Littrell gets his first win as head coach, although it will be a nail-biter. This Bethune-Cookman team is a solid FCS squad, and there are still a ton of issues that the Mean Green will face all season. But Morris will be able to move the football, and a big play late will seal the victory.

Bethune-Cookman vs. North Texas Score Prediction: North Texas 33, Bethune-Cookman 27
