The Boise State Broncos and Northern Illinois Huskies will face off in Southern California for the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec 23.

The Broncos (8-4, 5-3 MW) are making their 14th straight bowl appearance, which is tied for the sixth-longest active streak in the nation. The wheels came off down the stretch for Boise State as the Broncos lost two of their last three, but managed to head into the postseason with some momentum after beating San Jose State, 40-23, a couple weeks back. The Broncos faced a 10-6 deficit early, but rattled off 20 straight points before the Spartans answered to propel them to a sizeable victory. Jeremy McNichols had a big day for Boise, accounting for 192 of the Broncos’ 300 rushing yards on the day and found the end zone three times. Brett Rypien managed to play mistake-free football and turned in a solid performance of 197 yards through the air and two touchdowns. The Broncos are bowling for the 16th time overall and boast a 10-5 record in the postseason heading into their matchup with NIU.

The Huskies (8-5, 6-2 MAC) are making their eighth straight bowl appearance, extending their own MAC record. Northern Illinois is looking to rebound after a tough 34-14 loss to Bowling Green in the conference title game. The Huskies spotted the Falcons the game’s first 28 points, and couldn’t recover as Bowling Green took back the MAC championship. Tommy Fiedler got his first career start after injuries to Drew Hare and Ryan Graham thrust him into the lineup and understandably struggled. The walk-on threw for 152 yards on 12-of-28 passing with a touchdown, but was picked off three times. Joel Bouagnon also was held in check, the MAC’s leading rusher had 57 yards on 14 carries and was held out of the end zone. This is the 16th overall bowl appearance for the Northern Illinois program and 11th as a major college program.

The Poinsettia Bowl will mark the first meeting between Boise State and Northern Illinois. This will be the Huskies third appearance in the bowl (2006, 2013) and they are still seeking their first win.

    Prediction

The Boise State defense will be on against the run and Graham won’t be able to pick up the slack for the NIU attack. The Broncos will get up early and let the defense take over, winning both the turnover and field position battles along the way. It’ll be a great showcase day for the Mountain West.

    Game Notes

    • Since the Broncos joined FBS in 1996, they have failed to make the postseason just four times (1996-98, 2001).
    • The Huskie defense features sophomore cornerback Shawun Lurry, the national leader in interceptions with nine, and in interception return yards (273).
    • Thomas Sperbeck has put together a record-setting campaign in 2015, establishing Boise State’s new single-season mark with 1,334 receiving yards (topping the previous mark of 1,215 set in 2010 by Titus Young).
