Bowling Green vs. Eastern Michigan prediction and preview. Projecting who will win when the Falcons meet the Eagles in Saturday’s MAC contest.
Bowling Green vs. Eastern Michigan Game Preview
When: Saturday, Oct. 1 – 3 p.m. ET
Where: Doyt L. Perry Stadium, Bowling Green, Ohio.
TV Broadcast: ESPN3
Bowling Green is the defending MAC champion. You wouldn’t know it by how it’s played this season. The Falcons have allowed 77 points. In a single game. Twice. The most recent was last week’s blowout at the hands of Memphis as Bowling Green scored only three points, none in the second half. Yet, after all that, the Falcons come into this one as slight favorites.
Eastern Michigan is 3-1 but also has big loss on its resume – a 61-21 thrashing from Missouri. The Eagles survived four turnovers last week and put up 500 yards of offense in a 27-24 win over Wyoming and have won two straight since falling to the Tigers.
What to Know About Bowling Green
One might wonder if Bowling Green is even putting all 11 players out there defensively. It is giving up an average of 558 yards per game, has suffered the two worst losses by FBS teams this season – 77-10 at Ohio State being the other – and is giving up 55.3 points per game, most in the nation. The Falcons’ only win? A 27-26 squeaker over FCS foe North Dakota.
The offense is having its issues, too. James Knapke tossed three interceptions last week to give him nine on the season before being benched for freshman James Morgan, who also threw a pick. Knapke’s interception rate is 7.6 percent, which might be a clear sign for coach Mike Jinks to start Morgan going forward.
What to Know About Eastern Michigan
Todd Porter wasn’t much better for the Eagles last week. Porter tossed three interceptions within the first 17 minutes that led to 17 Wyoming points, with one being returned for a touchdown. He then threw another pick-six in the fourth quarter that gave the Cowboys the lead before Ian Eriksen’s touchdown run with less than two minutes left gave Eastern Michigan the victory.
Porter has thrown eight interceptions this season, so the Eagles may look more in Eriksen’s direction. Eriksen finished with 120 yards rushing last week and has scored at least once in each game.
Offense: Even – Both teams have lots of issues on this side of the ball.
Defense: Even – Actually, they have issues on both sides of the ball.
Special Teams: Even – For as many kickoffs as these two teams have fielded, neither team has been able to do anything with them.
Coaching: Even – Jinks is having a rough first year, and Chris Creighton won three games in his first two seasons with EMU.
Intangibles: Bowling Green – Falcons have won the last two matchups by a combined 82-10.
Matchup To Watch
Quarterbacks vs. The defenses
The quarterback play has been horrible for both teams. The defense has been horrible for both teams. It’s really a toss-up as to what will happen in this one.
Spread: Bowling Green -3
Bowling Green vs. Eastern Michigan Prediction
There’s really no telling what’s going to happen. Both teams are so unpredictable. But I’m going to go with Eriksen running all over Bowling Green as Eastern Michigan takes the victory.
Bowling Green vs. Eastern Michigan final score prediction: Eastern Michigan 49, Bowling Green 45.
