The Bowling Green Falcons will go up against the Georgia Southern Eagles in Mobile, AL on Dec. 23 in the GoDaddy Bowl.

The Falcons (10-3, 7-1 MAC) are appearing in their fourth straight bowl game and 13th in school history. Bowling Green is riding high after securing their 12th MAC title with a 34-14 win over Northern Illinois a couple weeks ago. The Falcons jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the game and never looked back. After missing last year’s title game with a hip injury, Matt Johnson wasn’t at his best, but put up a modest 235 yards and two touchdowns. Travis Greene carried a bulk of the offense on his back as he rushed 29 times for 183 yards and found the end zone twice. The Bowling Green defense feasted on the inexperienced Northern Illinois offense by forcing five turnovers, including three interceptions by walk-on Tommy Fiedler. The Falcons will be playing in their first game without former head coach Dino Babers, who departed to fill the opening at Syracuse. Former Texas Tech assistant coach Mike Jinks was hired in the place of Babers and will coach his first game for Bowling Green.

The Eagles (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) are making their first bowl appearance since being promoted to the FBS level. Georgia Southern won three of its last five coming into this one, but is looking to bounce back from its most recent game — a 34-7 loss to in-state rival Georgia State. An LA Ramsby one-yard touchdown run tied the game at seven early, but that is all the Eagles would get as the Panthers scored 27 unanswered points to close out the game. With the touchdown run, Ramsby was the lone bright spot for a Georgia Southern offense that struggled. In addition to the score he led the Eagles in rushing with just 65 yards on 15 carries. Georgia Southern just could not stop the Nick Arbuckle/Penny Hart connection as the two hooked up seven times for 129 yards and a touchdown. Like their opponent, the Eagles will be without their former head coach as Willie Fritz took the same position at Tulane. Running backs coach Dell McGee was named interim head coach.

The GoDaddy Bowl will mark the first meeting between these two squads. Bowling Green will be making its third appearance in the bowl. The Eagles beat Memphis in 2004 and lost to Tulsa in 2007.

    Prediction

Johnson and the Bowling Green offense will put up big numbers and come up with a terrific game, but the defense won’t be able to hit the curveball. Georgia Southern clunked hard against Georgia State in the regular season finale – it’s not going to have the same problems twice. The Eagles are 0-4 this year when running for under 233 yards, 8-0 when going over. They’ll go way over in what’ll be a blast of an offensive show.

    Game Notes

    • A win against GSU would make the Falcons 11-3 to finish the season, tying the school record for wins in a season.
    • Ladd-Peebles Stadium, is the home of the Eagles’ first bowl game, and the same place GSU won its first Sun Belt game.
    • With his 15-yard completion to Gehrig Dieter in the MAC title game, Matt Johnson surpassed Ben Roethlisberger (Miami, 2003) as the Mid-American Conference’s all-time single-season passing leader.
