Report: Ex-LSU QB Brandon Harris To Visit Three Schools

Former LSU starting quarterback Brandon Harris is set to visit three schools. The ex-Tiger will visit UNC, Texas and Arizona.

Combing through the transfer quarterback market is one avenue in which college football head coaches look to improve the position, as program-builders across the country are increasingly looking for the next Russell Wilson, who had a standout year in one final season at Wisconsin after transferring from NC State.

Former LSU starting signal-caller Brandon Harris is one player who has yet to settle on his future destination after deciding to leave Baton Rouge. But the ex-Tiger could be closer to making his decision.

According to The Advocate, Harris has set up three official visits as he seeks a new home for his final season of college football. He plans to visit North Carolina, Texas and Arizona. The Chapel Hill visit kicks off his journey on March 24, while the other visits do not have a set date. Harris plans to graduate from LSU, which would position him to play right away as a graduate transfer wherever he lands.

The visit to UNC makes the most sense because Larry Fedora’s Tar Heels have very little experience returning at the position since Mitch Trubisky has moved on to the NFL. Logan Byrd and Chazz Surratt both redshirted during their freshman season, and Nathan Elliott didn’t play much in backing up Trubisky.

Harris was the starter in Baton Rouge during the 2015 season, when he threw for 2,165 yards and 13 touchdowns along with 226 rushing yards and four scores. Last season, however, he lost his job to Danny Etling after two inconsistent starts to begin the year.

Despite his uneven play in Baton Rouge, Harris has talent and a skill set that would be desirable for a lot of quarterbacks. He is a former 4-star recruit who has a nice arm and the legs to pick up yards when plays break down. While decision-making falls on the quarterback, former LSU head coach Les Miles and his offensive staff often didn’t put their QB in the best position to succeed. Fedora, though, is an offensive mind that can perhaps help Harris thrive. UNC is a team filled with a lot of offensive skill, and Fedora’s system is friendly to most any quarterback who wins the job.

Meanwhile, the interest that Harris has in the Longhorns is interesting because Texas has a young signal-caller with a bright future in Shane Buechele. And at Arizona, Brandon Dawkins has showed flashes of strong play, and the job is his to lose even though Khalil Tate is a highly touted prospect who saw significant playing time midway through the 2016 campaign.

For Harris, a marriage to UNC just may be what both parties need.
