Brett McMurphy’s Musings and College Football Picks for Week 12

Week 12 features a reunion between two of football's biggest characters.

What I’m wondering while waiting for this weekend’s games…

On Saturday, Kansas Head Coach Les Miles will return to Stillwater, Okla., where he was Oklahoma State’s head coach from 2001-04.

A lot has changed in those 15 years since Miles coached the Cowboys, and on Monday, Miles was asked what he has learned most since his stint at Oklahoma State.

Not surprisingly, Miles provided another soundbite that was out of this world.

“That the Earth is round, generally speaking, some areas where it’s flat, but mostly round,” Miles said.

Saturday’s game will also be a reunion for Miles and current Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy, who was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator under Miles.

Before the season, they spoke briefly in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Big 12’s spring meetings, but this will mark their first meeting as head coaches.

Gundy said that he has “really good memories of offensive football” with Miles when they were on the same staff at Oklahoma State.

“He and I butted heads a lot,” Gundy added. “But in the end, we agreed and ended up on the same page.”

    Well, not exactly.

There was one thing Miles and Gundy never agreed on — the assistant coach’s game-day attire.

When Miles arrived at Oklahoma State in 2001, he wore his signature ball cap during games. Gundy wanted to wear a visor, but he wasn’t allowed to. The reason?

Because Bob Stoops, who coached at rival Oklahoma, wore a visor and Miles wanted to be different.

“I can only tell you visors were not allowed while I was coaching at Oklahoma State, only because, frankly, it was an identity the opponents had,” Miles previously told me. “The reality of it is a lot of the young guys (such as Gundy) had real thick hair, all wanted visors. I said, ‘No, we’re wearing hats or we’re wearing nothing.’

“A lot of them opted into the nothing. We wanted to be discernibly different, that’s all.”

Gundy previously told me he never asked Miles directly if the visors were banned because of Stoops.

“I do know this: Another assistant and I wanted to wear a visor and he (Miles) said, ‘We don’t wear visors,’” Gundy remembered.

“Miles had those 10-gallon hats. I didn’t wear one. They were wider than my head. I went to the equipment room and they said we don’t have visors. I never asked why we couldn’t have visors. We just couldn’t have visors.”

Coming off a strong 4-1 performance two weeks ago, I started hot last week with two early winners in Army and Ole Miss — and then the roof caved in. I ended the day with three consecutive losses to drop my season total to four games under .500.

We trudge along to this week’s picks. Odds from @BetOnline_ag:

    Oregon -27 vs. Arizona
    Iowa -3 vs. Minnesota
    Texas +7 at Iowa State
    Utah -20.5 vs. UCLA
