Behind 31 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks maintained their position atop the Eastern Conference with a 116-106 victory over the Mavericks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dallas rookie Luka Doncic recorded his first career triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, but was unable to lead the team to a win.

Antetokounmpo paced Milwaukee for much of the game and got plenty of support. The Bucks had six players reach double figures, including 11 points off the bench from Sterling Brown on 4-for-4 shooting. Eric Bledsoe was Milwaukee’s second-leading scorer with 21 points.

Surprisingly, the Bucks committed more turnovers and had fewer assists than the Mavericks in the win. However, Milwaukee did have a 10-point advantage at the line after Dallas went 10-17 from the stripe, which ended up being the margin of victory.

Doncic continued his ridiculous rookie season by becoming the second-youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double. The Mavericks will continue to rely on Doncic’s production going forward, but they’ll get help when Dennis Smith Jr. returns to the team Tuesday. Smith Jr. had been in communication with Dallas regarding his future and their standoff finally ended with both sides reconciling for the time being.

The Bucks extended their winning streak to five games with the strong effort and will get three days off before hosting the Hornets. Milwaukee has an important five-game road trip looming, so a win Monday before getting much-needed rest should raise the team’s confidence level. Antetokounmpo and Mike Budenholzer have the Bucks playing at a high level and their upcoming road trip will be another gauge on the team’s chances at contention.
