Florida Atlantic and Buffalo share similar goals this season—show improvement and contend for a postseason game. And in that regard, this weekend is important, because it’s a winnable game for both. The Owls have shown flashes against Tulsa and Miami, but not enough to win either game. And the Bulls put a scare into Penn State for three quarters, but couldn’t close in the fourth quarter.
The Bulls have a Big Three on offense, QB Joe Licata, RB Anthone Taylor and WR Ron Willoughby that’ll cause problems for the Owl defense. Florida Atlantic has yielded at least 44 points in each of the first two games, and it’s having major issues preventing long balls through the air.
The Owls remain hopeful about the offense, even if an ankle injury sidelines QB Jaquez Johnson. Young Jason Driskel received a lot of reps in the Miami loss, and backs Greg Howell and Jay Warren are running very well this season. The Bulls, which failed to notch a sack on the porous Penn State O-line, is light on standout defenders.
After allowing six sacks to Penn State, Buffalo will need to neutralize a Florida Atlantic front wall that gets off the snap quickly. DT Trevon Coley, in particular, can blow plays up with his quickness, and already has four sacks this season.
Florida Atlantic loses something on offense if Johnson is unavailable. But Driskel has upside, and he spent all of this week preparing as if he’ll be the starter. He’ll manage the game well, while Howell and Warren perforate a Buffalo defense that’s beatable on the ground.
Final: Florida Atlantic 33, Buffalo 27, Line: Buffalo -3.5, o/u: 65
