Florida’s Caeleb Dressel Swims Fastest 50 Yard Freestyle In History

Florida's Caeleb Dressel swam the fastest 50 yard freestyle race in history at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships.

Caeleb Dressel blew the field away again, this time winning the NCAA championship in the 50 yard freestyle.

Twelve years ago I swam in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA championships, a race that Auburn’s Frédérick Bousquet set a world record of 21.10 and the top eight racers finished in the top 20 of the world. It was one of the fastest fields in history.

On Thursday, five weeks after Caeleb Dressel swam one of the most eye-dropping races of all time at the SEC Championships with an 18.23 in the 50 yard freestyle, he made the field I participated in look slow.

    Dressel just keeps swimming faster.

The Gator sprinter won the 50 yard free crown with an 18.20, beating the field by a body length.

The current meet will run through Saturday, at which point Dressel will start training for the Olympic trials and, presumably, the Rio Olympics. If he continues down this path, the Gator could join Ryan Lochte as the next household name.
