Cal’s Justin Wilcox has found his offensive coordinator. The Golden Bears have hired Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin for the position.

Justin Wilcox has landed one of the best head coaches in the FCS to run his offense in 2017.

The new Cal head coach has hired Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin to be his offensive coordinator in Berkeley. Baldwin led the Eagles to an 85-32 overall mark with wins over Oregon State in 2013 and Washington State in 2015. He was their head coach since 2008, and helped the Eagles win the 2010 FCS national championship.

Baldwin has been considered a rising head coach for quite some time, and many college football observers believe it’s only a matter of time before he gets to run his own FBS program. A move to the Pac-12, even as a coordinator, could accelerate the next steps in his career.

This past season, the Eagles fell in the semifinals of the FCS playoffs, dropping a contest to Youngstown State. However, they won 12 games, and their only other loss was to powerful North Dakota State. Quarterback Vernon Adams and running back Taiwan Jones are two notable players who have been coached by Baldwin during his EWU tenure.

The new Golden Bears OC has overseen some prolific offenses during his EWU tenure and is familiar with the West Coast recruiting terrain. His pass-happy offense will make Cal a fun team to watch, especially as Wilcox continues to work tirelessly to improve a porous defense. The Golden Bears finished last season 125th nationally in total defense giving up an average of 518.3 yards per game. The Bears were also 123rd in tackles for loss and 107th in sacks.

Eastern Washington’s offense is a creative and efficient up-tempo attack that will play well in the Pac-12.
