California Coach Mark Fox Signs Five-Year Contract: Salary, Buyout, Incentives

    California basketball Head Coach Mark Fox signed a five-year contract with the university in July worth $8.25 million in combined base salary and talent fees.

    California basketball Coach Mark Fox signed a five-year contract with the university in early July worth $8.25 million in combined base salary and talent fees that extends through March 31, 2024.

    Stadium obtained a copy of the contract via public records request.

    Fox also earned a one-time hiring bonus of $100,000 and he can earn two retention bonuses worth $250,000 if he’s still employed by the university on Jan. 1, 2022 and Jan. 1, 2024.

    Fox’s base salary is $275,000 annually. Here’s how much he’ll earn on an annual basis between his base salary and talent fee:

    • Year One: $1.5 million
    • Year Two: $1.575 million
    • Year Three: $1.65 million
    • Year Four: $1.725 million
    • Year Five: $1.8 million

     

    Fox will also have the opportunity to earn performance-based incentives, provided that the team’s four-year average Academic Progress Rate (APR) score is at least 930. The incentives are outlined below:

    • Team wins at least a share of the Pac-12 regular season championship: $30,000
    • Team wins the Pac-12 Tournament: $20,000
    • Team wins 20 games: $10,000
    • Team is selected for the NCAA Tournament: $20,000
    • Team advances to the Round of 32: $25,000
    • Team advances to the Sweet 16: $30,000
    • Team advances to the Elite Eight: $40,000
    • Team advances to the Final Four: $50,000
    • Team wins the national championship: $75,000
    • Named Pac-12 Coach of the Year: $20,000
    • Named National Coach of the Year: $25,000
    • Team GPA at least 3.00: $50,000
    • Team GPA at least 2.85: $40,000
    • Team GPA at least: 2.70: $20,000
    • Team APR score at least 985: $45,000
    • Team APR score at least 975: $30,000
    • Team APR score at least 960: $15,000

     

    However, Fox can’t earn more than $300,000 in bonuses in a single contract year.

    Fox will also receive a courtesy car and he’s eligible to receive a membership at a country club that’s paid for by the university.

    If Fox is terminated without cause, here’s how much the university will owe him:

    • Year One: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the remainder of the contract year in which the termination occurs.
    • Year Two: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year
    • Year Three: 75% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year
    • Year Four: 50% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year
    • Year Five: 25% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

     

    If Fox terminates his contract with Cal, he’ll owe the university the following:

    • Prior to April 30, 2020: $3 million
    • Prior to April 30, 2021: $2 million
    • Prior to April 30, 2022: $1 million
    • Prior to April 30, 2023: $500,000
