We put the best of the best uniforms in college sports head-to-head in the first ever Campus Insiders uniform tournament.

Before we get into our Round of 32 voting results for the Basketball and Hockey regions of our bracket, you should know that I greatly feared for my life Monday evening. You see, I, for whatever reason, have the world’s worst luck when it comes to using Uber. I’ve been randomly dumped off on the side of the road in the middle of a corn field at 1:30 a.m. with no reason given by the driver. I’ve had my driver rip out an illegal substance and start smoking in the middle of a ride, and so on. The list is a long one. But yesterday was a different animal.

I was picked up after work by an Uber driver to take me to the train station, and all was normal. Then, the guy started flying down the streets of Chicago like a lunatic and blew right through a stop sign at a four-way intersection. As fate would have it, there was a cop driving right behind us who promptly pulled us over, issued my driver a warning, and told him to “slow down and watch for stop signs.” As soon as the police officer left, my driver sped away and blew right through the very next stop sign at another four-way intersection! I was white-knuckling it in the backseat and came extremely close to getting out of the car the next time we came to a stop, which was no guarantee at that point. Fortunately, we made it to the train station in one piece. So, the moral of the story: Don’t ever get into an Uber with me.

    On to the bracket.

    Basketball Region

No. 1 Duke vs. No. 9 Louisville

Somehow, Duke required my help against Oregon to make it into the second round of this tournament. My skepticism of my co-workers’ ability to see correctly is growing. This time around, I feel we have a much more even matchup, as Louisville’s black alternates are no pushover. Both of these uniforms are classics and should be worn every year. Heck, maybe if Duke and Louisville had been able to wear these this past weekend they’d both be in the actual Sweet 16 right now. Alas.

    Voting Results: Duke wins, 4-3

No. 4 Arizona vs. No. 5 Illinois

One of the single greatest NCAA Tournament games ever played happened 12 years ago between these two teams. Remember that instant classic Elite Eight showdown in which Illinois battled back from a 14 point deficit with just over three minutes to go and won the game in overtime? I sure as heck do. This matchup, while not quite as nail-biting as the one that determined a regional champion, came down to the wire. And much like 12 years ago, the Illini advance.

    Voting Results: Illinois wins, 4-3

No. 3 Villanova vs. No. 6 Miami (FL)

Both Villanova and Miami walked away with pretty lopsided victories in our first round, and rightfully so. They each pack some power and have the ability to pull off a win at anytime. Naturally you’d think that would translate into a close finish between these two east coast foes, but that is not the case. Hurricane season is still a a few months away.

    Voting Results: Villanova wins, 6-1

No. 2 Kansas vs. No. 7 UCLA

It’s truly a shame that one of these two legendary uniforms has to be sent home in the second round, but so goes life. Without taking the actual voting results into account, I would personally vote for Kansas here. I like UCLA’s blue and yellow, but I’m a bigger fan of Kansas’ red, white and blue combo. That being said …

    Voting Results: UCLA wins, 4-3

    Hockey Region

No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 9 Quinnipiac

My pre-tournament prediction was that Ohio State would represent the Hockey region in our Final Four in large part due to their helmets. Quinnipiac, on the other hand, definitely owns the ability to pull off an upset at anytime with that Sabres-esque color scheme. Maybe against certain other teams they could pull off the upset, but not today.

Voting Results: Ohio State wins, 4-3

No. 4 Michigan vs. No. 5 Notre Dame

Here we’ve got the best matchup of the round in this region. Two absolutely phenomenal uniforms. Just tremendous. Michigan comes into this one with their bright yellow sweaters, while the Irish walk in with their blue and gold uniforms and their awesome gold lids. If it wasn’t for the fact that the Wolverines also have some legit helmets (same design as the football team), maybe Notre Dame blows Michigan out of the water here. However, in this case we’ll call the helmets a wash and let the sweaters decide our winner.

Voting Results: Notre Dame wins, 4-3

No. 3 Maine vs. No. 6 Union

Before we progress any further, I’ve been told by my brilliant co-worker Brian that the hockey region has a northern state bias. Thank you, Captain Obvious. Now go find out why it doesn’t snow in Miami and report back.

As for our actual uniform matchup here, we’ve got a couple northeastern teams going head-to-head. Maine comes in with a rare color scheme, while Union owns one of the more modernistic-retro uniforms in the region. It is without question a very competitive second round battle.

    Voting Results: Union wins, 4-3

No. 10 North Dakota vs. No. 15 Harvard

In what I would consider the second most surprising upset of the entire tournament so far, Harvard squeaked into the second round with a massive upset victory over No. 2 Minnesota in Round 1. I’m still scratching my head over that one. This time around, however, the Crimson’s luck appears to have run dry.

Voting Results: North Dakota wins, 4-3
