Texas Tech has fired coach Kliff Kingsbury, a source told Stadium.

Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt will hold a 3 p.m. ET news conference on Sunday to discuss “the future of the football program.”

Kingsbury, a former star quarterback with the Red Raiders, was 35-40 in six seasons at Texas Tech. Under Kingsbury, the Red Raiders annually had one of the nation’s top passing offenses, but also one of the nation’s worst defenses. Kingsbury finished with three consecutive losing seasons at Tech.

The Athletic first reported Kingsbury’s firing.

Kingsbury wasn’t the only coaching casualty on Sunday.

North Carolina announced the firing of coach Larry Fedora. In seven seasons under Fedora, UNC was 45-43, including 28-28 in ACC play, with four bowl appearances.

“It has been a great honor to be a part of this incredible University,” Fedora said in a statement. “I am extremely disappointed that I will no longer be UNC’s head football coach – I hate that it had to end this way.

“The last two seasons have been challenging and heartbreaking. The results are not what we wanted and it has been frustrating for everyone involved – coaches, athletes, fans and supporters alike. The results did not reflect the commitment and hard work put in by our players and staff. The players never quit – ever. That speaks to the character of this team and this great University.

“I wanted the opportunity to fix this. I wanted to make the changes necessary to win again. I also understand this business. I understand that you don’t always get the time you want to turn things around. I respect the administration’s position and understand their actions.

“I leave UNC grateful for the opportunity I was given seven years ago. I am thankful I had the chance to work with Chancellor Folt and Bubba Cunningham; I appreciate their leadership and friendship. My family and I will always cherish the time we spent and relationships formed here at UNC and in Chapel Hill.”

It wasn’t all bad news for coaches who were on the hot seat. Illinois announced that Lovie Smith will receive a two-year extension through 2023. Smith is 9-27 in three years with the Illini.

“This extension demonstrates my belief in Lovie Smith, his staff, and the plan they have for the future success of Illinois Football,” Illinois AD Josh Whitman said in a statement. “I have studied our program extensively, and I see steady progress, both in the development of our current players and the talent we are adding to our roster. To date, we have remained one of the youngest teams in college football, with only nine seniors and nearly 80 freshmen and sophomores. As our players grow in strength, skill, and experience, more wins will follow.”

USC Athletic Director Lynn Swann announced Sunday afternoon that the Trojans will keep Head Coach Clay Helton on board.

“It is my firm belief that we have a good team returning next year and a solid foundation in place, and that Clay Helton is a good coach,” Swann said in a statement.

“Let me be clear to everyone, our players, our recruits and our fans. Clay Helton is our head coach and he will continue to be our head coach.”
