A college football news roundup that includes Tennessee avoiding an upset and Western Kentucky getting off to a good start.

College football season kicked off last night with some interesting games, including No. 9 Tennessee barely surviving a major upset against Appalachian State in overtime, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson making an early case for performance of the year, and Utah State routing Weber State in the first game to ever be streamed live on Twitter. Here are some more noteworthy tidbits in our college football news roundup.

Hilltoppers Rout Rice – Western Kentucky didn’t miss a beat with new quarterback Mike White making his debut, as he shined in the opener, throwing for 517 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-14 win. It won’t be as easy for the Hilltoppers next week, as they travel to Alabama to face the top-ranked Crimson Tide.

Will Muschamp Era Starts With A Win – Down 10-3 in the fourth quarter, South Carolina came back to defeat Vanderbilt, 13-10, on a 55-yard field goal with 35 seconds left in head coach Will Muschamp’s first game as head coach of the Gamecocks.

Penn State Honoring Paterno – In a controversial move by Penn State, the school has decided to honor former head coach Joe Paterno on the 50th anniversary of his head coaching debut for the Nittany Lions on September 17 against Temple.

Indiana Avoids Upset – Sure, the Hoosiers won 34-13, but the game was a lot closer than the final score indicates. Kevin Wilson’s team was down 13-12 in the fourth quarter to FIU before running off 22 straight points for the season opening win.
