Heading into this weekend’s college football action, there are multiple storylines and several lines that jump out at me for Week 13.

Let’s close out the regular season with some smart bets.

Week 13’s Betting Storylines to Watch

The line in the Oklahoma-West Virginia matchup has moved all over the place

A spot in the Big 12 title game will be on the line when No. 6 Oklahoma travels to No. 13 West Virginia for a meeting on Friday night. Oklahoma was a 2.5-point favorite on Sunday evening before the line flipped and West Virginia became a one-point favorite. The line moved again on Monday afternoon and the Sooners are now a 1.5-point road favorite.

I’d bet on Oklahoma, who still has an outside shot at making the College Football Playoff, to cover against the reeling Mountaineers — especially if the Sooners become an underdog anytime before kickoff.

Urban Meyer and No. 10 Ohio State are underdogs for the first time since January 2015

It’s hard to believe that a one-loss Ohio State team is a home underdog late in November, but that’s the case when the Buckeyes take on No. 4 Michigan on Saturday.

Even though Ohio State was installed as a nine-point favorite when the South Point Sportsbook released their Game of the Year odds in May, the Wolverines are currently a 3.5 or four-point road favorite (depending on where you shop for your lines).

That’s because Michigan is on a 10-game winning streak and is No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings. A win for either team means a date with Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship, but Ohio State can spoil their biggest rival’s playoff hopes with a victory.

Ohio State has failed to cover in six of their last seven games, but you have to consider betting on them this week in a rare underdog role. The last time they were underdogs was the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship against Oregon — a game in which they won with third-string QB Cardale Jones leading the offense.

Urban Meyer has been an underdog six times since becoming the Buckeyes’ head coach, and Ohio State has covered and won each of those games outright.

Michigan is obviously the hotter team right now, but I would only consider betting on Meyer’s Buckeyes to cover in this spot.

No. 11 Florida vs. Florida State will have a HUGE impact on the recruiting landscape

The Florida-Florida State matchup on Saturday might be a snoozefest, but the result could go a long way when it comes to future recruiting battles in the Sunshine State.

Not only would Florida head coach Dan Mullen love to hand Willie Taggart his seventh loss of the season and end Florida State’s streak of playing in 36 consecutive bowl games, but Mullen would have serious leverage over Taggart, who is regarded as one of the best recruiters in the country, when making his pitch to potential players this offseason.

Remember that we now have an early signing period from December 19 to December 21, and then there’s the traditional National Signing Day in February. Mullen would gain a lot of brownie points with recruits if he could tell them that he won nine games in his first season with the Gators while FSU failed to make a bowl game under their own first-year coach.

The line for this matchup is trending up and currently has Florida, who I expect to win comfortably, as 5.5-point favorites.

    Monitor the Jeff Brohm situation

There have been strong rumors that Purdue’s Jeff Brohm is the top candidate for Louisville’s vacant head coaching job. It makes sense since Brohm, a Louisville native who played for the Cardinals, has impressed as the head coach of both Western Kentucky and the Boilermakers.

But the distractions surrounding his future might be real considering the way Purdue lost to Wisconsin in Week 12. The Boilermakers were on the verge of picking up their sixth win and becoming bowl eligible, as they had a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. Then Wisconsin stormed back to tie the game, eventually winning in triple overtime to leave the fans in West Lafayette stunned.

Purdue now has to go on the road and face 5-6 Indiana, a team that the Boilermakers beat in 2017’s bowl-clinching, regular season finale. I think the motivated Hoosiers will have revenge on their mind as second-year coach Tom Allen tries to guide Indiana to a bowl game.

Leading up to kickoff, make sure to stay updated on the rumor mill surrounding Brohm. It’s hard to bet on Purdue when you know their coach could be on the sideline for the last time.

    Week 13’s Best Bets

Iowa (-9.5) over Nebraska on Friday

Nothing is better than watching Big Ten football early on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so make sure you get your leftovers ready and enjoy this showdown in the nation’s heartland.

We liked Nebraska last week and they came through, despite not scoring a touchdown in an ugly 9-6 win over Michigan State. That was a huge win for the Cornhuskers in the final home game of the season, so I’m expecting a little bit of a letdown in this road setting.

Iowa, who opened at -7.5, has a much better offense than Michigan State, so they should have success against a shaky Nebraska defense. The weather is calling for temperatures in the 40s and a chance of rain, which bodes well for an Iowa defense that could make life very difficult for Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez.

Put your money on Iowa as long as it stays under -10.

No. 16 Washington (+3) over No. 8 Washington State on Friday

Not only do I think this is a situation where the wrong team is the favorite, but it could end up being one of my favorite college bets in 2018. That’s how much I love Washington as the underdog.

Although Washington has had a disappointing season, the Huskies are more talented than Washington State and arguably the better-coached team, as proven by the fact that they’ve played hard during the past month despite knowing they were out of the College Football Playoff picture.

On the other sideline, upstart Washington State has had a high-pressure stretch of games against opponents like Stanford, California, Colorado and Arizona.

The two rivals now collide with a trip to the Pac-12 Championship at stake. Washington has recently dominated the Apple Cup series, specifically since Chris Petersen took over in 2014. The Huskies have won and covered the spread in the last four meetings between the two schools, as Petersen seems to have Mike Leach’s number.

While Wazzu has battled to keep their playoff hopes alive during the last month, Washington has had the chance to look ahead and prepare for this game, which is why I’m predicting them to win straight up in Pullman on Friday night.

Miami (-6) over No. 24 Pittsburgh

Miami showed some signs of life last week by snapping a four-game losing streak and earning their sixth win of the year at Virginia Tech. It’s definitely been a disappointing season in South Florida, but the Hurricanes now have something to look forward to with a bowl game on the agenda.

Pitt clinched the ACC Coastal with a 34-13 win over Wake Forest last week and deserves a lot of credit for the season they’ve put together, but I think the Panthers could be looking ahead to their ACC Championship matchup with Clemson and not be totally focused for their trip to Miami.

Revenge could also be a motivating factor for the ‘Canes.

Miami played Pittsburgh on the Friday after Thanksgiving last year and was handed its first loss of the season. That loss was also the catalyst for a three-game losing streak to end the season for the Hurricanes. Keeping that in mind, there’s absolutely enough line value to bet on the Hurricanes to cover under a touchdown.

No. 12 Penn State (-13.5) over Maryland

How does Maryland bounce back from that loss to Ohio State?

The Terrapins had multiple chances to pull off an epic upset against the Buckeyes and become bowl eligible last week, but they lost in overtime after failing on a two-point conversion. Now Maryland has to travel to Penn State, where it will be Senior Day for quarterback Trace McSorley.

McSorley is one of the most successful quarterbacks in the program’s history, and I expect a strong effort from him and the offense. I also don’t believe that Penn State head coach James Franklin, who was a longtime Maryland assistant before taking the Vanderbilt job, will have any problem with running up the score if the situation presents itself.

The hangover effect for Maryland has merit in this spot, so place a wager on Penn State at under two touchdowns.
