Former Alabama quarterback Cooper Bateman has found a new university in Utah, per Scott Garrard.

Bateman has enrolled at the university, but has yet to join Kyle Whittingham’s team. The assumption is that he will join the team for spring practice.

During the last two seasons as a member of the Crimson Tide, Bateman served as the backup to newcomers: first to graduate transfer Jake Coker in 2015, and then true freshman Jalen Hurts this past season.

It was announced in December that Bateman, a former 4-star recruit, had been granted a release from the Crimson Tide program after spending four years in Tuscaloosa.

While his natural position is at quarterback, Alabama had worked Bateman out at wide receiver at times during his tenure with the program. While the Utah athletic department did not comment on Bateman’s status with the team, the Salt Lake Tribune did learn that the football coaching staff was unsure of what position he would play when he joins the Utes.

Bateman was a star quarterback at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake, receiving a scholarship offer from the Utes for the 2013 recruiting class.
