Bad News, ACC Defenses: Deondre Francois Is Getting ‘Better And Better’

FSU quarterback Deondre Francois is getting even better according to Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher, and that is scary for ACC defenses.

Deondre Francois excelled as a freshman playing quarterback for Florida State. Throwing for 3,350 yards, he led all freshman in passing yards. The scary thing for ACC defenses? He’s still improving.

“He is getting better and better,” head coach Jimbo Fisher said on Thursday. “He has done some things wrong, but so have the rest of the guys.”

Francois threw for 20 touchdowns to seven interceptions in 2016 while completing 58.8% of his passes. He seemed to be at his best when the pressure was on, leading the Seminoles to four comeback victories as FSU went 10-3, including a 33-32 victory over Michigan in the Orange Bowl.

“This guy is a big time player,” Fisher said. “He can lead, he is tough, accurate and can throw the ball. He will make a lot of money in this game one day.”

Fisher knows when he has a special talent under center, having ridden Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston to the 2013 BCS National Championship and serving as a quarterback coach at Auburn, Cincinnati, LSU, and Florida State before taking the helm of the Seminoles program.

With Francois back for his sophomore season, Fisher is aware of the ups and downs that comes with playing the quarterback position, and expects Francois to build on an impressive rookie campaign.

“That’s the thing with the quarterback, they get all of the blame when things go wrong and all the glory. He probably played as well as anybody last year.”
