TCU QB Foster Sawyer is transferring. The Horned Frogs signal-caller could not beat out Kenny Hill for the starting gig in Fort Worth.
Foster Sawyer has decided to leave TCU.
The Horned Frogs sophomore quarterback announced his decision on Monday afternoon. Sawyer started two games in two years with the Horned Frogs.
“Texas Christian University. This has been one of the more difficult decisions I’ve had to make,” he wrote. “I want to thank Coach Patterson, Coach Cumbie, and the rest of the staff for giving me a chance to play for such a great program like TCU. Playing in Purple and White was a dream come true for me. I have made life long relationships in the locker room, and for that I will always be grateful. I love this game and I am going to keep striving to see my dreams through.
“To coach Cumbie, thank you for modeling me into a better QB, and even more importantly a better Christ-like leader. To all the people that have mentored me during this process, I can’t thank you enough. The Fort Worth community will always hold a close place in my heart, and I will always call it home. Thank [you] TCU nation!”
In limited action during eight games in 2016, Sawyer threw for 278 yards with one touchdown and an interception. For his career, he has thrown for 433 yards with three touchdowns and four picks.
The Fort Worth, TX, native set high school records at Fort Worth All Saints for career passing yards (5,997) as well as single-season passing yards (3,192) and touchdowns (48). The 6-5, 230-pounder started the year competing for the open quarterback position with Texas A&M transfer Kenny Hill, who won the job but struggled at times throughout the season.
Sawyer’s most significant action occurred when he took over for Hill against Texas Tech in a loss on Oct. 29 after Hill struggled. But Sawyer completed just 35.3 percent of his throws in relief. He struggled again in the season-ending loss to Kansas State, as the Horned Frogs were held without a touchdown in a game for the first time since 2006.
TCU has a commitment from DeSoto QB Shawn Robinson, who is one of the better dual-threat QBs in the entire 2017 class. But the loss of Sawyer certainly hurts the QB depth for Gary Patterson and Co.
