Why You Need To Care

Florida State dropped a spot in the AP poll, but it had nothing to do with its play on the field. The Seminoles were sharp in their opener with Texas State, popping the lid on the Everett Golson era with a 59-16 demolition. FSU can’t afford to look past South Florida, which routed Florida A&M in Week 1, and would love to use this trip to Tallahassee to capture in-state—and national—notoriety.

Why USF Will Win

The Bulls can’t match the Noles’ talent, but their want-to and motivation are unmatched. Head coach Willie Taggart, in particular, could boost his job security with a good showing here. True, it was only one game versus an FCS team, but South Florida was on point in all phases, outgaining the Rattlers, 556-182.

Why FSU Will Win

The Noles played last week as if they’re enjoying not being America’s ‘it’ team for a change. Golson was crisp, throwing for 302 yards and four scores, and Dalvin Cook and Mario Pender rolled on the ground. Plus, the defense held a potent Texas State offense 17 points below last year’s average. It was a strong all-around start for the new-look Noles.

Player Who Matters

The youthful FSU O-line, which starts four underclassmen, is off to solid start, especially in run blocking. South Florida, though, will offer a different challenge. The Bulls are always quick on D, and they registered 15 tackles behind the line last week, three apiece from linemen Bruce Hector and Demetrius Hill.

What’s Going To Happen?

This is Taggart’s best team yet in Tampa, which is cause for optimism. But with Florida State keying on RB Marlon Mack, it’ll be a tough morning for young QB Quinton Flowers. Meanwhile, the combination of Golson and Cook will keep the Bulls guessing on defense, as the Seminoles pull away after halftime.
