Five-Star Shooting Guard Gary Trent Jr. Commits To Duke

Five-star shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. has committed to Duke. He is the No. 2 shooting guard and No. 12 overall prospect in the 2017 class.

Duke’s 2017 class is already off to a blazing start, per usual.

The Blue Devils have landed five-star shooting guard Gary Trent Jr., the No. 2 shooting guard and No. 12 overall prospect in the 2017 class. Trent announced his decision as part of ESPNU’s National Signing Day.

Hailing from Prolific Prep in Napa, California, Trent is one of the most gifted scorers in his entire class. Trent is capable of knocking down shots from any spot on the floor, and he plays with an aggressive nature. That toughness allows him to score through contact and handle physical defenders.

He led the USA Basketball U16 team to the gold medal and led the team in scoring after averaging 16.8 points per game to go along with 2.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Trent shot a resounding 50.8 percent from the floor and 37.1 percent from behind the arc during his time with the U16 squad. He ranks third among all-time USA U16 leaders for points (84) and 3-pointers made (13).

Though his offensive game is his strongest quality, Trent is also a terrific defensive player and can handle guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter player.

Along with the Blue Devils, Trent was also considering Michigan State and UCLA. He had also taken unofficial visits to the likes of Kentucky and Minnesota.

Joining Trent in Duke’s 2017 class so far is four-star shooting guard Alex O’Connell.
