Paul Johnson always knew that replacing Justin Thomas under center would be difficult, as Thomas proved to be the best passing quarterback that the Georgia Tech head coach has been able to bring into Atlanta during his tenure.

While there is plenty of time remaining before the start of the 2017 college football season, Johnson will not be able to see Thomas’ replacement during the rest of spring football.

Matthew Jordan, who saw action in nine games last season playing mostly in goal-line or short-yardage situations, will miss the remainder of spring practice with a non-contact foot injury suffered in the team’s scrimmage at Bobby Dodd Stadium this past Saturday.

A Yellow Jackets team spokesman did not know how much time beyond spring ball that Jordan could be out.

“It’s unfortunate that Matthew will miss the rest of the spring, but we’re looking forward to getting him back and competing for the starting position as soon as possible,” Johnson said in a statement.

The junior signal-caller entered spring drills as the No. 1 quarterback, with Johnson stating that he hoped Jordan would secure the starting job by the end of spring practice, which concludes on April 21 with the team’s annual spring game. Jordan’s absence means that backups TaQuon Marshall, Lucas Johnson and Jay Jones will get more snaps. The junior Marshall played two games last season in mop-up duty, while Johnson and Jones are redshirt freshmen.

If Jordan’s injury is a non-issue come preseason camp, there is no question that he will still have the upper-hand for the starting job no matter what happens the rest of spring. This Yellow Jackets offense is still a run-based attack, and Jordan rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead GT to a 30-20 upset of Virginia Tech when Thomas was hurt last season. More of that type of play will be expected in 2017.
