Greg Ward Jr. is ready to go for Houston’s American Athletic Conference clash against Cincinnati on Thursday night.

Ward confirmed Monday that he’s been cleared to play and doesn’t expect to have any limitations in the primetime showdown with the Bearcats. Coach Tom Herman said Ward is still sore, but he expects any pain to subside by kickoff.

The dual-threat quarterback suffered a shoulder injury in the Cougars’ 33-23 win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma on Sept. 3 that kept him out of last week’s game against Lamar. Kyle Postma started that contest and led Houston to a 42-0 victory after a lengthy lightning delay.

Ward underwent treatment prior to the game, and the delay allowed him to receive a second treatment that wouldn’t have happened until Sunday. That allowed him to recuperate quicker and helped him practice both Sunday and Monday.

Houston couldn’t have received better news prior to its AAC opener. Ward burst onto the national scene last year while throwing for 17 touchdowns and running for 21 more. He tossed two touchdown passes in the win over Oklahoma that helped the Cougars reach No. 6 in the AP Top 25 and plant them firmly in the discussion for the College Football Playoff.

Ward will have his top rusher in the backfield Thursday, too. Duke Catalon, who ran for 88 yards against the Sooners, also sat out against Lamar because of an injury but has been cleared to play against Cincinnati.
