Some .500 teams view bowl games as a chore … Washington isn’t one of those squads

Chris Petersen’s second Husky team is one of the youngest in the country. As such, it’ll really benefit from the 15 practices and four additional quarters that come with bowl eligibility. The staff went with underclassmen just about everywhere, including the backfield duo of QB Jake Browning and RB Myles Gaskin. So, for Washington, this is more the beginning of 2016 than it is the end of 2015. While the Huskies lost three close games, they earned a signature win at USC and closed with victories over Oregon State and rival Wazzu. Despite rampant turnover, the defense was a wire-to-wire rock, leading the Pac-12 in scoring and total D.

    Southern Miss Is Back

The Golden Eagles used to be a mid-major juggernaut, going to 18 straight bowl games from 1994-2011. But then there was a lull after Larry Fedora left for Chapel Hill, with the program winning just four times over the last three years, Well, Southern Miss is back, thanks to Todd Monken and his staff. The Eagles have won nine this year, and came within a sloppy half of football at Western Kentucky Saturday from winning a Conference USA title. This is a complete team that gets it done on both sides of the ball. And with a genuine appreciation for this moment, sans any entitlements, the USM players will be jacked up for its bowl game.
