Houston will reportedly hire Lane Kiffin as its next head coach pending a meeting with the school president. Kiffin is currently serving as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

For the first time since 2013, Lane Kiffin appears set to be a head coach again.

The current Alabama offensive coordinator will meet with Houston President Renu Khator on Thursday, and she will have to give the final approval to sign off on the hiring of Kiffin to coach the Cougars, according to USA Today.

There have been conflicting reports about whether or not Kiffin has officially been extended an offer, but it appears increasingly likely that he will fill the position.

Houston’s head coaching job became vacant last month when Tom Herman left to accept Texas’ head coaching gig.

Les Miles and Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando were reportedly eliminated from consideration as of Wednesday, and Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, who was also a candidate for the job, was ruled out as well.

As mentioned, Kiffin has not served as a head coach since 2013 when he was fired by the USC Trojans after five games. Kiffin, the son of legendary defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, took over the Trojans in 2010 following Pete Carroll’s departure. In the three-plus seasons Kiffin led USC, the Trojans were 28-15.

Prior to the move to Los Angeles, Kiffin spent the 2009 season with the Tennessee Volunteers, which ended with a 7-6 mark.

Despite the short tenure with the Vols and the firing by the Trojans, Kiffin has revitalized his image thanks to Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. After he was let go by USC, Kiffin was hired by Alabama as its offensive coordinator.

In 2014, the Tide finished No. 18 in total offense (484.5 yards/game) and No. 16 in scoring offense (36.9 points/game). The following season saw Alabama finish No. 45 in total offense (427.1 yards/game) and No. 30 in scoring offense (35.1 points/game). This year, the Tide have been led by true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts this season, and those rankings have moved up slightly.

Alabama is No. 26 in total offense (471.3 yards/game) and No. 13 in scoring offense (40.5 points/game). The Tide will take on Washington in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 31 as part of the College Football Playoff. It is unknown at this time whether Kiffin will coach Alabama in the playoff.
