If December 4, 2015, the day Pittsburgh running back James Conner found out he had Stage 2A Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, was one of the most trying days of his life, then today, May 23, 2015 must be considered one of the best.

Conner took to Twitter to announce the news that he is now cancer free.

The junior began undergoing chemotherapy soon after he received the news, and has been working toward getting back on the field for the Panthers.

“I choose to not fear cancer,” Conner said after the diagnosis. “I will play football again.”

In 2014, Conner was named the ACC Player of the Year after rushing for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns as a sophomore. In the season opener last year, he suffered a torn ligament in his right knee and missed the rest of the season.

Conner has gained recognition for his battle against cancer, earning Twitter followers whom he would update with his last 12 chemotherapy treatments and celebrating certain events. Recently appearing on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Conner showed his bravery.

“(My doctor) said it’s about 85-95 percent curable,” Conner said. “That’s more than enough for me. If it was 2 percent, I was going to beat it.”

On Monday, head coach Pat Narduzzi released a statement on Conner being an inspiration to the Pitt community.

“Over the past six months, James Conner fought cancer the same way he plays football: relentlessly and without surrender. He has inspired and touched so many people in how he has handled this challenge. James is an incredibly special person, and I’m not even thinking about his football ability when I say that. Everyone at Pitt feels blessed to know him and we are tremendously thankful for the wonderful news he received today.”
