The No. 4 Kansas Jayhawks will battle the No. 20 Kentucky Wildcats at the Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

The Jayhawks (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) have lost two of their last three, including an 85-72 defeat from the Iowa State Cyclones on Monday night. Kansas took advantage of a slow Iowa State start and led by seven at halftime. Monte Morris spearheaded a 24-7 run midway through the second half to drop the Jayhawks for the fourth time in their last five meetings. Perry Ellis led Kansas in scoring with a game-high 23 points. Frank Mason III (16 points) and Wayne Selden (11 points) were the only other Jayhawks in double figures. However, it was Morris who prevailed for the Cyclones with 21 points and nine assists in all 40 minutes of action.

The Wildcats (16-4, 6-2 SEC) have won three straight games since their loss to Auburn on Jan. 16, including their 88-54 drubbing of Missouri Wednesday night. Kentucky got right down to business early jumping out to a 20-2 lead early and kept that level of dominance throughout the game as its lead reached as many as 28 in the second half. The Wildcat big men had a field day in the post out-rebounding the Tigers, 47-28, and blocking a season-high 11 shots on the night. Tyler Ulis led the charge for Kentucky with 20 points and eight assists, while Derek Willis notched his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 boards.

The Jayhawks and Wildcats will meet for the 29th time on Saturday, with Kentucky dominating the series so far by, 22-6. The Wildcats have won the last three meetings between the two programs.

Prediction

Both teams have failed to live up to expectations so far this season — Kentucky much more so than Kansas — but this is their last chance to put a big non-conference win on their resumes, so expect a wild one in Lawrence, Kan. Kentucky will put up a strong fight, but coming off its loss to Iowa State on Monday, Kansas is going to take care of business at home, where it’s won 36 straight.

Game Notes

  • Jamal Murray has made at least one 3-point shot in every game this season, the first player in Kentucky history to make a triple in each of his first 20 collegiate games.
  • The Jayhawks are 8-1 this season and 196-8 during the Bill Self era (since 2003-04) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field.
  • If the Wildcats can get into a defensive slugfest, they’ll have the edge. UK is 61-0 under Coach John Calipari when keeping the opponent to 55 or fewer points.
