The No. 1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks will battle the No. 5 seed Maryland Terrapins in the second regional semifinal in Louisville of Thursday.
The Jayhawks (32-4) have advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013 and did so with a 73-61 win over Connecticut on Saturday. Kansas led by 20 at halftime and coasted the rest of the way for the easy victory. The Jayhawks were plus-20 in the rebounding margin, shot double the amount of free throws and held the Huskies to 33.9 percent shooting on the night.
The Terrapins (27-8) ended a Sweet 16 drought that has spanned 13 years with their 73-60 win over Hawaii on Sunday. The Rainbow Warriors held a two-point lead midway through the second half, but the Terps would ride a 14-0 run from that point to victory. Maryland was outrebounded and missed it’s first 15 three pointers (1-of-18 for the game), but it shot 45.8 percent from the field while holding Hawaii to 32.9 percent.
Kansas and Maryland will meet for the sixth time on Thursday, with the Jayhawks holding a slim 3-2 edge. The last meeting between these two programs was in the 2002 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta. The Terps would win the game, 97-88, on their way to a National Championship.
