The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks will travel to Lubbock to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a Big 12 battle on Saturday.
The Jayhawks (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) are riding a 12-game winning streak that includes two Big 12 wins over Baylor and, most recently, Oklahoma. The 3OT affair with the Sooners was an instant classic, which ended with a Buddy Hield three-point try for the tie that failed to connect. Hield was the high-man between the two squads with 46 points, but the Jayhawks had three players with 20+ points in Perry Ellis (27), Devonte’ Graham (22) and Wayne Selden Jr. (21). In addition to his 27 points and logging 53 minutes, Ellis grabbed 13 boards for his first double-double of the season. Looking ahead, the Jayhawks will continue their road trip to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers on Jan. 12.
The Red Raiders (11-2, 1-1 Big 12) were winners of 10 consecutive games before dropping a tough one to Iowa State, 76-69, last time out. After facing a deficit as big as 18 points, Texas Tech clawed back to get within two. However, Georges Niang and the Cyclones went on a short run to stave off the Raiders and win the game. Texas Tech sported a balanced scoring attack that was led by Justin Gray, who dropped 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench. The Red Raiders couldn’t recover from a poor shooting performance from downtown as they finished 2-of-15 (13.3%). Up next for Texas Tech is a trip to Manhattan to take on the Kansas Statae Wildcats on Jan. 12.
Saturday’s matchup will mark the 34th between the two schools. Kansas has a commanding 29-4 lead in the series and has won 12 consecutive games over Texas Tech.
