Kent State vs. North Carolina A&T Game Preview

When: Saturday, Sept. 10 – 6 p.m. ET

Where: Dix Stadium, Kent, Ohio.
Broadcast: ESPN3
Kent State opened the season at Penn State and hung tough for a half. That’s quite an accomplishment for a team that played two freshman quarterbacks and relied on another to handle the rushing load. The Golden Flashes are young and still trying to work out some of the kinks, something they hope to do against one of the better FCS teams this week.
North Carolina A&T is nationally ranked in the FCS poll and got in its own tuneup with a 62-0 thrashing of Division II St. Augustin’s College. It’s safe to say the Aggies will have a tougher test this week.

What To Know About Kent State

There’s definitely going to be some growing pains. True freshman Justin Agner tossed two picks, and redshirt freshman Mylik Mitchell completed only half of his 12 pass as the pair combined for 129 yards. They also ran 22 times between them with a finishing line of 34 yards. The early struggles were expected, but they’re learning. Fellow freshman Justin Rankin had a solid day with 82 yards on 13 carries, but the Golden Flashes’ only score came on a fumble return that tied it at 13 late in the second quarter. The offense stagnated in the second half in the 33-13 loss.

What to Know About North Carolina A&T

The Aggies went 10-2 last year and are bidding to reach the FCS playoffs this season. It’s tough to tell if they’re for real after one week of beating up on a Division II team. The numbers look great – outgained St. Augustine’s 428-159, balanced rushing attack and two touchdown passes from Lamar Raynard. But it was against St. Augustine’s. We’ll see how they fare against an FBS team.

Advantages

Offense: Kent State – Rankin has the potential to be a special back.

Defense:  Kent State – Big play by Elcee Refuge to bring the fumble back to the house against Penn State, which went just 5 for 14 on third down.
Special Teams: Kent State – Shane Hynes kept the Flashes in it early with a pair of field goals.
Coaching: Even – Rod Broadway has made North Carolina A&T an FCS contender. Paul Haynes is on the hot seat at Kent State after three straight losing seasons.
Intangibles: Kent State – The Flashes should be more prepared considering each team’s first opponent.

Matchup To Watch

Kent State’s youth vs. The Aggies’ defense

No matter the opponent, shutting out a team and holding it to fewer than 200 yards is an accomplishment. Kent State will try to show North Carolina A&T that playing that type of defense is much more difficult on the FBS level.
