The Kent State Golden Flashes will travel to Athens Tuesday night for a MAC East division conference game against the Ohio Bobcats.

The Golden Flashes (3-6, 2-3 MAC) haven’t had much success recently in the MAC, having lost two straight and three of their last four in conference play. Last time out, Kent State gave up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter to fall 18-17 to Buffalo. Joe Licata led the Bulls on two touchdown drives in the fourth and the Golden Flashes didn’t have an answer. Demetrius Monday had the play of the game for Kent State, picking off Licata in the second quarter and returning it 69 yards for a touchdown to give the Golden Flashes an early 7-6 lead. Monday added to his interception total (6), which is good for fifth in the nation.

The Bobcats (5-4, 2-3 MAC) are reeling as of late, having lost their last three games, all against conference foes. The latest loss came last week, a 62-24 shellacking at the hands of the Bowling Green Falcons. Ohio was competitive early, managing to tie the Falcons at 14 with 10:03 left in the second quarter, but Bowling Green would score 27 unanswered points to extend the lead to 41-14 in the third. The Bobcats had no answer for the trio of Matt Johnson (26-35, 365 yards, 4 TD), Travis Greene (13 car, 106 yards, 3 TD) and Gehrig Dieter (9 rec, 136 yards, 2 TD). Ohio’s offense did show up, recording season-highs of total offense (541) and rushing yards (299).

Kent State and Ohio have been playing one another since the 1936 season and Tuesday night’s game is the 68th meeting between the two squads. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 40-25-2 and have won five of the last eight.

Prediction

Don’t expect any fireworks. First one to score wins? That might be a little much, but not by a lot. Ohio has spent the last three games getting bombed on and blown out, but at home it’ll do just enough on the defensive front to keep Kent State from going on any long drives. Neither team turns the ball over a ton, and there won’t be any cheap points, so it comes down to who can move the ball just a little bit. Ohio will do it with the passing game.
