Kentucky vs. Austin Peay Game Preview

    When: Saturday, November 19 – 4:30 p.m. ET
    Where: Commonwealth Stadium, Lexington, KY
    TV Broadcast: SEC Network

Kentucky’s struggles against Tennessee continued as the Wildcats were defeated 49-36 by the Volunteers. Boom Williams had a productive day, running for 127 yards and a touchdown, but quarterback Stephen Johnson was ineffective, completing just 12-of-29 pass attempts for 192 yards and an interception.

The Governors are having a horrible season, carrying a record of 0-10 with the closest loss coming by one point against Tennessee State. The defense is second to last in FCS in total defense, allowing 516.3 yards per game.

    What To Know About Kentucky

With a win, the Wildcats will become eligible for a bowl game for the first time in Mark Stoop’s four-year tenure. The Wildcats will lean on Williams and Benny Snell Jr. to pound the ball against the Governors’ hapless defense, while Johnson will try and get some confidence throwing the ball.

The Wildcats defense should be able to shut down Austin Peay, although the Governors offense hasn’t been bad, averaging 375.8 yards per game.

What to Know About Austin Peay

What do you say about a team that is 0-10? I can’t think of much. This will be a great opportunity for the players that were overlooked in high school to play in front of a big crowd at an SEC stadium, so they will be pumped up about that. It’ll be a memory that a lot of the players will be talking about for quite some time. If they have time before or after the game, I recommend they check out Tally-Ho for a cheap burger and fries.

    Advantages

Offense: Kentucky. Snell is going to be a star in the SEC.

Defense: Kentucky. They have had a couple of rough weeks against UGA and Tennessee.

Special Teams: Kentucky. Punter Grant McKinniss has to be better, as he averages just 39.83 yards per punt.

Coaching: Kentucky. Making a bowl game is a big accomplishment for Stoops, and should keep his job safe for another year.

Intangibles: Austin Peay. Hey, if you are going to just win one game a year, might as well make it this one.

    Kentucky vs. Austin Peay Prediction

I’m happy for Stoops that he will get the monkey of not making a bowl game off of his back. Rebuilding the program from where it was under Joker Phillips will take time, and it isn’t like Kentucky can just pick up major recruits like most other SEC programs. It is baby steps for the Wildcats, and getting an extra few weeks of practice before the bowl game will be beneficial. Kentucky will put this away before halftime and turn its attention toward somehow stopping Lamar Jackson the following Saturday.
