FAU head coach Lane Kiffin has agreed to a five-year, $4.75 million deal that will pay him $450,000 less than what he was earning at Alabama.

Lane Kiffin is a head coach again, accepting the position at Florida Atlantic on Monday, but with the new responsibilities come a decrease in pay.

Per ESPN, Kiffin and the Owls have agreed to a 5-year, $4.75 million deal, making his salary $950,000 per season—$450,000 less than what he was being paid as the offensive coordinator at Alabama.

FAU protected itself with a big buyout clause, starting with $2.5 million after the first year and it being reduced by $500,000 each season afterwards. One of the biggest possible snags when it came to hiring Kiffin for schools such as Houston and USF were the buyouts, considering Kiffin’s past of leaving a job like Tennessee after one season for the USC position.

Kiffin was introduced at an introductory press conference on Tuesday morning in Boca Raton, where the 41-year-old coach spoke on building the Owls into a championship team and how he is a different person, both on and off the field, from his days in charge of the Volunteers and Trojans.

The job for Kiffin will not be easy, as the Owls—which only became a program in 2001—have finished 3-9 in each of the past three seasons. He will take over for Charlie Partridge, who lasted just three years at FAU.
