Larrañaga: Implement NCAA Tournament Expansion ‘As Soon As Possible’

Miami Hurricanes head basketball coach Jim Larrañaga said he supports the ACC’s proposal to expand the NCAA Tournament from 68 to 72 teams. The expansion would essentially create an additional “First Four” round.

“I think it’s a great idea. I think we should implement it as fast as possible,” Larrañaga said in an exclusive interview on Stadium’s Campus Insiders.

“I think we should add four teams on the west coast so teams on the west coast that are in that First Four game are not traveling from the west coast to Dayton.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford told the Raleigh News Observer the conference would be proposing a separate First Four in the western part of the country despite the quick turnaround. This would be in addition to the “First Four” already hosted by the University of Dayton.

Larrañaga is in agreement, saying the move would create tremendous buzz around the tournament.

“We need to find a great location. University of Dayton is a tremendous host site because they pack the place—13,000 fans for every game,” Larrañaga told host Kristen Balboni. “They’re rabid college basketball fans. Let’s find a place out on the west coast that’s like that. Add four more teams and four more exciting games.”

Larrañaga isn’t the only coach from the conference in support of tournament expansion. Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is in favor of an even bigger expansion.

“The NCAA owns two properties—the NCAA Tournament and the NIT,” Coach K told the Duke Chronicle. “What I propose is that you combine the two properties and come up with a field of 96. You would have 64 teams play. Thirty-two teams get byes, and then it would be the same tournament, but with 96 teams.

“I wouldn’t marginalize the NCAA Tournament. Combine it; reward the regular season. That’s what I would do.”

Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton is also in agreement with tournament expansion, saying the conversation needs to be had.

“We all know that college basketball is growing in popularity,” Hamilton told The Oklahoman. “And when you look at what has happened in the last couple of years with a lot of teams hitting their stride at the end of the season, I really do think it’s time to begin the conversation of expanding the NCAA tournament.”

If the NCAA agrees on the ACC’s proposal, it would be the first time the tournament expanded since 2011 when the NCAA went from 65 to 68 teams. Prior to that, the field went from 64 to 65 teams in 2001 to create the first play-in game since the 1984 field.

The conference is also proposing changes to the three-point line, resetting the shot clock after offensive rebounds and widening the lane area.

And with coaches like Larrañaga, Krzyzewski and Hamilton on board, change could be coming to NCAA basketball.
