The hits keep on coming for LSU.

One week after losing to Wisconsin during college football’s opening weekend, star running back Leonard Fournette will sit out Saturday night’s home game against Jacksonville State, according to LSU.

Fournette suffered a minor left ankle injury in a scrimmage Aug. 16. He was able to play against the Badgers, but he further tweaked his ankle in the 16-14 defeat.

Another report said that Fournette possibly could miss next week’s game against Mississippi State. The Tigers, who opened the season No. 5 in the AP Top 25, can’t afford to be without their most dangerous offensive weapon for very long.

Fournette rushed 23 times for 138 yards while also catching three passes for 38 yards against Wisconsin. The performance particularly was more impressive considering he was being bothered by the ankle injury. He did come up limping noticeably after a run late in the game.

The junior entered the year as a Heisman Trophy candidate after bursting on the national stage last season with 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns. An extended absence because of the injury not only would hurt Fournette’s Heisman chances, but missing its top player likely would hinder LSU from getting back into the discussion for the College Football Playoff.
