Les Miles will be returning to Ann Arbor next Saturday as a spectator, and the Michigan alumnus couldn’t be happier with the way Jim Harbaugh is guiding the Wolverines program.
Les Miles is returning to Michigan. That headline was almost printed in December 2007 when it was falsely reported that Miles was leaving LSU to take over the football program at his alma mater.
Now, after having some free time since being fired by the Tigers in late September, Miles will be in Ann Arbor as a spectator while attending Michigan’s matchup against Indiana next Saturday.
Don’t expect Miles to be lobbying for the Wolverines’ job though, as he is more than pleased with what Jim Harbaugh is doing in his second year in charge.
“I am thrilled with Jim Harbaugh,” Miles said. “I love what’s going on. He’s competitive, he fights and he’s teaching what he knows. I can’t be any happier. They have the opportunity to play for the college playoffs and that says something.”
Miles was an offensive lineman for the Wolverines in 1974-75 and played for the legendary Bo Schembechler, who finished his Michigan tenure with a 194-48-5 record and 13 Big Ten championships. For Miles, he sees a lot in Harbaugh reminiscent of his old coach.
“It’s being run the way Bo would have had it run,” Miles said. “The success is reminiscent of the success we had when Bo was here. I just know that Jim, I love the Block M hat he wears. You’ve got to understand something, for a guy who has worn a hat to cover my head my whole career, I could not be any more kin to that hat.”
Harbaugh is trying to do something that Schembechler never could: win a national championship. Miles, though, who led LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, is looking for his next landing spot to reach the apex of college football.
“There has to be another championship out there I can win somewhere,” Miles said.
