LSU head coach Les Miles said that playing a tough opener against Wisconsin will put the Tigers in a better position for the rest of the season.

LSU head coach Les Miles is taking his team north to take on Big Ten power Wisconsin on Saturday, and for Miles, opening a game against a tough team is something he says will benefit the Tigers into the season.

“When you play quality opponents you sincerely hope you reach the level of play and operate at a very fast. . . high level,” Miles said during a weekly teleconference. “Then (you) take that level into the rest of your season and continue to improve again from an elevated spot because you had to play a quality team in Wisconsin. There is risk and reward certainly. Even into the rest of the season when you play a tough opener puts you in better position for some of the tougher games that will come down the road.”

Here are some other notes of quote from Miles.

On players doing Lambeau Leap on Saturday

“I promise you that if anybody jumps (for) the Lambeau Leap, they’ll end up with their thumb out to see if they can get a ride home,”

On if Wisconsin game helps strength of schedule

“I’ve not worried about strength of schedule here for quite some time. I recognized when we get into the (SEC) West you’re playing as quality a division as there is in college football. I’m sure there will be a segment of schools that will need to have a ranked team or any out of conference marquee opponent so you could make your case. I don’t know that that is necessary in the SEC.”

On all assistants being on the field instead of press box

“Both coordinators have shown the want and ability to be on the field. We have quality GAs that have the ability to see and translate what goes on during the game.”
