Louisiana Tech is thrilled to be back in Ruston following excruciating road losses at Western Kentucky and Kansas State. The Bulldogs sent the game with the Wildcats into overtime on a last-second field goal, yet couldn’t close the deal. Still, it was further proof that the team is again a contender to win the Conference USA West. Florida International rebounded from its first loss to handle N.C. Central a week ago, 39-14.
The Panthers might be the better defensive team in this one. They’re yielding just 2.7 yards per carry, while having more picks than touchdown passes allowed. Linebackers Anthony Wint and Treyvon Williams and ends Michael Wakefield and Denzell Perine headline a front seven making more money plays than the Bulldogs at this time.
The defense needs some fine-tuning, but the offense is building a head of steam. QB Jeff Driskel and RB Kenneth Dixon form a solid backfield, while WR Trent Taylor has already caught 24 balls for 327 yards and three scores. In two games with FBS opponents, FIU had problems putting the ball in the end zone.
The Panther O-line is weak, though it has been much better in pass protection than run blocking. The unit will have its hands full trying to contain a Bulldog front four being spearheaded by Vernon Butler and Vontarrius Dora. If Tech can pressure the pocket, it’ll force young FIU QB Alex McGough into turnovers.
La Tech better have a clear head, because Florida International will be upset-minded all season long. Knowing what a second conference loss would mean, the Bulldogs will operate with a sense of urgency, relying on the passing of Driskel and the tough running of Dixon to snap the two-game losing streak.
Final Score: Louisiana Tech 34, FIU 17, Line: Louisiana Tech -14.5, o/u: 57
