Why You Need To Care

Louisiana and Louisiana Tech meet for the 87th time in a tussle of longtime rivals. The Bulldogs have owned the series of late, winning in Lafayette last September, 48-20. Tech takes a break from Conference USA play this weekend following last Saturday’s unremarkable win over Florida International. After starting the season strong, the Cajuns tanked last weekend at home to Akron, 35-14.

Why Louisiana-Lafayette Will Win

Prior to last week’s debacle against the Zips, the Cajun offense had played pretty well against Kentucky and Northwestern State. Backs Elijah McGuire and Torrey Pierce have had 100-yard games running behind guards Mykhael Quave and Donovan Williams, and the quarterbacks are athletic. Tech’s D was vulnerable in losses to Western Kentucky and Kansas State.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs can run the ball as well with Kenneth Dixon, who averages more than seven yards a carry. But they also feature a potent passing game with Jeff Driskel and an ensemble of talented receivers, like Trent Taylor. The Cajuns, on the contrary, are woefully one-dimensional, throwing one touchdown pass and ranking 113th nationally in passer rating.

Player Who Matters

The battle between Louisiana’s Quave and Williams and La Tech DT Vernon Butler will be among the most intriguing of the evening. While the Cajuns excel at creating seams for McGuire, Butler can eat up blocks, and is a big reason why the Bulldogs are allowing just 3.3 yards per carry.

What’s Going To Happen?

Tech is the far more consistent team, on both sides of the ball. And Louisiana is trending decidedly south after getting wrecked by Akron. The Bulldogs will stack the box to stop McGuire, while using their myriad offensive weapons to coast to a comfortable win.
