The Bulldogs boast the better overall mix of offensive personnel and defensive talent, especially up front. Rice isn’t getting it done on D, ranking near the bottom of the league in sacks and takeaways, while giving up more than seven yards a play. The Bulldogs’ balance of Kenneth Dixon’s running and the passing of Jeff Driskel to Trent Taylor will give fits to a second-rate Owl defense.
Winners of two straight, the Owls are beginning to rally around multi-dimensional QB Driphus Jackson. Jackson has thrown five touchdown passes without a pick the last two games, which is helping free up Rice’s backs. And quality opponents this year have dented the La Tech secondary, which is No. 10 in Conference USA pass defense.
With a share of first place on the line in the West Division, Louisiana Tech will come up with the timely stops and money plays on defense to secure a critical road win. While both offenses will play well and move the chains, Rice’s inability to win the line of scrimmage will prove costly against the power of Driskel and Dixon.
Prediction: Louisiana Tech 37, Rice 31, Line: Louisiana Tech -12.5, o/u: 67.5
