The Northern Illinois Huskies will make their third consecutive appearance in the MAC Championship Game as they take on the Bowling Green Falcons Friday night in Detroit.

The Huskies (8-3, 6-2 MAC) are playing in their sixth straight MAC Championship Game, tying Marhsall’s record for most consecutive appearances. Northern Illinois suffered a loss to Ohio last week that snapped a six-game winning streak. Fortunately, Toledo also lost to Western Michigan last week, giving Northern Illinois the conference title game berth.

The Huskies never held a lead in last week’s game against the Bobcats. The Ohio defense really clamped down on the Northern Illinois running game, allowing just 73 yards on the ground. Joel Bouagnon, the MAC’s leading rusher, was held to 37 yards on 16 carries and was unable to add to his touchdown total, which ranks fourth in the FBS. Ryan Graham got off to a good start for Northern Illinois (11-of-17, 142 yards, TD), but left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury and didn’t return. In his place, Tommy Fielder performed admirably completing nine of 17 passes for 113 yards and a late 11-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay, making it a five-point game, but it wasn’t enough.

The Falcons (9-3, 7-1 MAC) will make their third straight appearance in the MAC title game. Bowling Green finished the season winning eight of their last nine games, including last week’s 48-10 beat down of Ball State. The Falcons got out to a 34-0 lead before Ball State finally put points on the board. With the defense keyed in on Matt Johnson, Bowling Green used their rushing attack to flatten the Cardinals. Bowling Green’s Fred Coppet (12 car, 109 yards, TD) and Matt Domer (3 car, 105 yards, TD) each topped the 100-yard mark on the night, while Travis Greene fell three yards shy (17 car, 92 yards, 2 TD). Matt Johnson had a quiet day for his standards, hitting on 24 of his 31 passes for 236 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His last score, however, tied the MAC record for single-season touchdown passes with 41.

These two squads will face off for the 20th time since 1967, with Bowling Green leading the all-time series 11-8. Friday’s matchup serves as the rubber match between the two programs as the Huskies took last year’s title game, while the Falcons were victorious in 2013.

    Prediction

Northern Illinois knows how to rise up in MAC championship games, but Bowling Green’s offense will be too potent and too effective. Johnson will be the difference, the Falcon run defense will hold serve on a few key stops, and the program will have its second MAC title in three seasons.

    Game Notes

    • Shawun Lurry’s eight interceptions set NIU’s modern day single season record. His eight INTs lead the Football Bowl Subdivision as do his passes defended average (1.8/game).
    • BGSU’s nine wins marks just the fifth time since 1995 that the Falcons have won at least nine games in a season.
    • The Huskies are 3-3 all-time in MAC Championship games and have won the title four times overall, including its first MAC title in 1983. NIU has won three of the last four MAC Championships (2011, 2012, 2014).
