Washington freshman Markelle Fultz officially declared for the NBA Draft on Friday, a move that was expected before the potential No. 1 pick even stepped foot on campus.
Markelle Fultz has been considered one of the top NBA prospects in college basketball since the start of the season, and he decided to get his announcement out of the way early.
Fultz released a video through Washington on Friday officially declaring for the NBA Draft in a move that everyone expected long before he enrolled for his freshman year with the Huskies.
“It’s been an honor to play in front of the Husky fans and I really appreciate all of the support you guys have given me,” Fultz said. “After sitting down with my Mom and the coaching staff, I’ve made the decision to enter the NBA Draft. Although the season hasn’t gone as planned, it’s really truly been a blessing to be here. I’m always going to be a Husky for life.”
Washington’s season ended Wednesday when it fell 78-73 to USC in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. The Huskies finished 9-22 overall, but that didn’t hurt Fultz’s draft stock one bit despite him having to sit out the final six games with an injury.
Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in his only season at Washington. NBA scouts regularly watched him play, and there’s little doubt that the 6-foot-4 guard will be among the first players chosen this summer.
Many NBA Draft experts believe Fultz will be the No. 1 overall pick and that his already polished game that will allow him to contribute immediately.
