The No. 10 Maryland Terrapins will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. Saturday to take on the No. 20 Purdue Boilermakers in what should be a deafening Mackey Arena.

The Terrapins (23-5, 11-4 Big Ten) have had nearly a week off since they beat Michigan, 85-82, at home to end a two-game slide. Maryland had control of this one most of the way, but its turnovers let Michigan get back in the game and allowed the Wolverines to take a 73-72 lead with 6:34 to play. The Terps would rally, however, and take the lead back on a Robert Carter layup. From that point on, Maryland staved off Michigan and captured a much-needed win. It was a sloppy game for both teams as the Terps lost the turnover battle (18-16), but made up for it with solid shooting from the field (54.4 percent) and from the charity stripe (89.5 percent). Four of Maryland’s five starters found themselves in double figures, led by Robert Carter, who had a team-high 17 points.

The Boilermakers (21-7, 9-6 Big Ten) have battled inconsistency as of late, losing two of their last three games, including a crushing 77-73 loss to hated rival Indiana last Saturday. Indiana led for most of this one and its lead grew to as many 19 in the second half, but Purdue battled back late and closed the gap to just two points with 39 seconds left. With the clock under 10, Yogi Ferrell drove the lane and put up a layup, which A.J. Hammons rejected off the glass. Goaltending was the call from the officials, and it essentially put the game on ice for Indiana. The Purdue big men combined for 39 of the team’s 73 points, but they allowed the Hoosiers to can 12 three pointers on the night. Turnovers, again, proved to be a problem for Purdue as the Boilers were minus-nine in the turnover category (13-4). Caleb Swanigan led Purdue with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds.

Maryland and Purdue will face off for the second time this season and Saturday’s game will be the third all-time. The Terps took the last meeting, 72-61, earlier this month when the Boilers went to College Park Feb. 6.

    Prediction

Both of these teams come into this one with some question marks about how they’ll fare in March, but the winner will get some much needed confidence for the stretch run. The Terrapins haven’t been themselves over the last five games and now walk into one of the most hostile environments in the Big Ten — Mackey Arena. If there was a time for the Boilers to rise to the occasion, Saturday would be a good time to do it.

Purdue played Maryland tough in College Park, Md. over a month ago, but poor shot selection doomed it late. If the Boilermakers can put together two solid halves offensively, which has been tough for them in conference play, they’ll be in good shape.

The key here is Caleb Swanigan. If the freshman can learn from his defensive mistakes and check Robert Carter on the perimeter this time around, the Boilers will pull the upset in a close game.

    Prediction: Purdue 73, Maryland 68

    Game Notes
