Miles Bridges is projected to be a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft following a stellar freshman season at Michigan State.
If he decides to leave East Lansing, that is.
Yahoo! NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday on Twitter that Bridges has cancelled scheduled meetings with agents and is learning heavily toward returning to the Spartans for his sophomore season. Wojnarowski also said that Bridges’ decision is expected to be finalized after a meeting with coach Tom Izzo, although there has been no word when that meeting will take place.
Bridges immediately would put Michigan State in the discussion of national championship contenders for the 2017-18 season. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Bridges averaged 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds last season for the Spartans, who finished 20-15 and lost to top-seeded Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Bridges lived up to the hype as one of the nation’s most electrifying athletes, soaring to the hoop for dunks, rising high for rebounds and blocking shots with authority.
NBA scouts love Bridges’ game, and draft experts pegged him going in the lottery and possibly even the top 10. But Bridges made no secret throughout the season how much he loved college and playing for Izzo, and it seems like he could follow in the footsteps of former Spartan Gary Harris, who now plays for the Denver Nuggets after returning for his sophomore season despite being a lock for a first-round pick following his freshman year.
Bridges would team up with fellow returning freshmen Cassius Winston, Joshua Langford and big man Nick Ward, who far exceeded expectations. The Spartans lacked an inside game last season with Gavin Schilling and UNLV transfer Ben Carter missing the entire year with injuries, but they’re seeking another year of eligibility from the NCAA.
Izzo has another solid recruiting class coming in with 5-star standout Jaren Jackson Jr. and 4-star Xavier Tillman, who is rated as the top high school player in Michigan.
